Steel Industry Initiates Acceptance to Alternatives to WSIB
By Lina Demedieros
Remember when the steel industry insisted on WSIB Clearance Certificates with no exceptions? GOOD NEWS! They are NOW allowing Owner Operators on site with an alternative to WSIB “PRIVATE INSURANCE”. Unfortunately, we do not have permission to release this information to you but stay tuned for full disclosure on the waiver and when they make this announcement. An alternative to WSIB is NOW accepted.
This waiver basically waives any right for you or the transport company to sue the steel carrier irrespective of fault; placing the onus and obligation on you as an independent owner operator as well as the transport carrier. Furthermore it will remove any opportunity for the company you may be representing a right to sue them. This will certainly decrease overall operating costs for many of our clients who haul steel and already understand that they do accept liability and responsibility for a job well done each day, protect themselves and their families; this is business as usual with an increase in profits.
When private insurance was NOT accepted many of our clients maintained their alternatives fundamentally due to the Illness protection element. They understood the overall need and maintained minimum coverage to produce clearance certificates for these companies.
This online application will be available soon on their website. I am very impressed, since we were dismissed two years ago and advised to have the transportation industry develop a waiver and accept responsibility and liability.
The implementation of this waiver will also require some extra due diligence from a contracting stand point as well as implementation of alternatives to WSIB.
